Install Roboto Font on OS X


If you’re a fan of Google’s Roboto Font, you don’t have to be using Android 4.0 to be able to use the font. In fact, Google will let you download it’s Roboto Font and install it on your computer. You may have never installed a font on your Apple computer before, but it’s surprisingly easy. Here is how.

First of all, you’re going to want to go to Google’s “Android Design” site and look at the bottom right of the screen. You will see a link titled “Download Roboto“. Or you can just click on the link here. One thing worth noting though, any time you install a font on your computer, make sure the source is trustworthy. Once you’ve downloaded the zip file, double click to unzip it.

Roboto Font Design and Usage Book

The usage book for Roboto Font is pretty cool looking from a design perspective. It shows examples of what different versions of the font look like.

Inside the folder, there are a several versions of Roboto font. Along with those, there is a pdf file called “Roboto Specimen Book”. It’s a pretty neat pdf showing you what the different versions of Roboto font look like. That way you will know what “Roboto Light” and “Roboto Medium Italic” look like before you install the fonts.

Roboto Font - Installing it on the Mac

This is the screen you are presented with when you click on one of the Roboto Font .ttf files. Click “Install Font” to install the font on your Mac.

So all of the files in the folder have a .ttf extension. Those are all font files. “.ttf” stands for “True Type Font”, which is just a type of font. Double click on one of the font files, which ever version of Roboto that you want to install. When you click on the font file, a window will pop up, showing what that version of Roboto Font looks like. At the bottom right of the window, click on the button that says “Install Font”. Repeat this process for each version of Roboto Font that you want to install on your Mac.

It’s that easy. Now go type your term-paper in Roboto Font.
