Some of you out there may be running Ice Cream Sandwich, 4.0 of Google’s Android operating system. You may have noticed the snazzy new font that they’re using, it’s called Roboto Font. This is Google’s in house designed font for their mobile OS. If you’re a fan of the font, well you’re in luck. Google has allowed anybody to download the font for free. Since it’s a standard font, you can even install it on your computer if you like.

Step 1: Download Robot Font

The first thing you’re going to need to do is to visit Google’s site for Android Development called “Android Design”. At the bottom of the screen, there is a link that says “Download Roboto“. You can do that, or you can just click the link in the previous sentence. That links directly to the official Roboto Font download on the Google site. It’s not wise to go around downloading fonts from untrusted sources and putting them on your computer.

Once you’ve downloaded it, go ahead and unzip the file. You’ll see that along with several versions of Roboto Font, there is a .PDF file called “Roboto Specimen Book”. Basically it’s a book that shows usage examples of all of the variations of the font. It’s just a way to see what “Roboto Bold” looks like compared to “Roboto Italic” I must say, it’s a pretty cool looking book, beautifully designed.

If you notice, all of the fonts in the folder have a .TTF extension. That means that these are a type of font called TrueType Fonts. It’s a standard that was originally developed in the 1980′s by Apple as a competitor to Adobe’s PostScript fonts. Most fonts used on a Windows computer, or a Mac are TrueType fonts.

Step 2: Drag The Roboto Font File Into The Proper Folder

On Windows 7, installing a font is super simple. Open up “My Computer”, navigate to the “Windows” folder, then find the “Fonts” folder. Drag the fonts that you want to install into that folder. That’s it. Seriously, it’s that easy. And if you ever want to remove any of these versions of Roboto Font from your Windows 7 machine, all you have to do is to go to that same “Fonts” folder and remove the font file that corresponds with the font.

Step 3: Bask In Your Technical Prowess and Profit

There you have it. Now you can write that term paper in style, or make sweet business proposals where people will say “Shut up and take my money.”, because you will show yourself to be a person of technical capability and style.
